watercolor and ink plein air paintings
In the 1800's art supplies were not as simple or as accessible as they are in today's age. Paints were once mixed by hand with pigments, oils, binding agents, and being mobile was challenging. When pre-mixed paint in tubes became available, painters began to take their canvases and paints outside to paint the natural world. Changing shadows, weather conditions, and having limited supplies to paint can be a profoundly enjoyable experience. I choose this style of painting because being outdoors provides the opportunity to come across interesting people, places, and challenges that simply don't happen in a studio. To read more about my adventures in plein air and the competitions they are outlined in my blog.
